Former West Texas A&M football star and two-time Super Bowl champion Jesse Powell died Thursday at age 65 in a Lubbock hospital.
Powell was born in Matador and grew up in Spur. He played defensive line/linebacker for then-West Texas State from 1966 to 1968.
Powell was inducted into the WT Hall of Champions in 1988.
Powell was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the ninth round of the 1969 draft and played five seasons in the NFL.
Powell played on Super Bowl-winning teams with the Dolphins in 1972 and 1973. The 1972 team went 17-0. One of Powell’s prized photos was of him tackling Buffalo Bills running back O.J. Simpson. read more…
